Some schools, according to the Post, are blocking students from downloading the upgrade until school IT administrators have fully tested it. According to a report in The Washington Post, many colleges and universities have blasted Microsoft for releasing the update so close to the start of the fall semester, when thousands of students will return to campus with their computers, which will likely need the upgrade. However, by the end of the first week of the updates release, the list of software conflicts neared 50 and users began pleading with Microsoft to shut off the Windows automatic update so they could buy more time to prepare their networks and test the OS. Thats to be expected, even though release was delayed more than a month to fix other bugs. In advance of the release, Microsoft warned that some programs might not work once the new OS was installed (including Microsoft products, which would need to be you guessed it upgraded in order to work properly). But in the name of security (or sloppy software design), Microsoft created a lot of headaches. The new release was designed to plug myriad security holes that existed in earlier versions of Windows and Internet Explorer. Earlier this month, Microsoft released its much-anticipated Service Pack 2 for the Windows XP operating system.
